Needs Analysis & Review

Today’s youth are dealt with many challenges, including single parent homes, drug and alcohol abuse, and increasing crime.  According to the 2012 Healthy Youth Survey, students in grade 8 demonstrated a higher than state average of substance use, binge drinking, and bullying.  Fewer students in grade 8 felt safe at school than the state average.  Students in grade 10 demonstrated a wider margin of substance abuse and binge drinking than the state average.  While the margin of bullying was less than for 8th grade students, the incidence was still greater than the state average.  For 12th grade students, substance abuse and binge drinking continued to widen the margin from the state average.

Many of our young people feel ignored and isolated on the Peninsula, and suicide is one of the leading causes of death in this age group.  Unfortunately there are no recreation clubs, coffee shops, or other youth-oriented gathering places that offer opportunity in the community. There will be activities at the Red Barn that are not available at any other facility in the local area which is easily accessible to middle school and high school youth.
